Grampian Highlands and Aberdeen This north-east corner of Scotland is a contrast of high mountains, barren moorland and some of the most productive agricultural land in the UK - and Royal patronage! At its core is Scotland's third city, Aberdeen, Europe's oil capital with a strong seafaring tradition and cultural heart. Peterhead and Fraserburgh are the fishing capitals of Scotland but all around the coast the maritime tradition prevails. Picturesque old fishing villages like Pennan nestle all along the northern Moray Firth coast and here the richness of the soils explodes into colour in towns like Elgin and Forres. This is ancient Scotland at its best with a myriad castles and historic buildings. Then, inland, away from the coast, the fertile agricultural lands give way, eventually, to the mountains, glens and rivers so loved by the Royal Family, especially around Deeside where Queen Victoria built her “holiday home” of Balmoral Castle. The rivers of the north east give rise to two very popular products, fishing and whisky. The Dee, Don, Spey, Deveron and Ythan and their tributaries offer some of the finest game fishing in Scotland and the River Spey conjures up other thoughts of whisky. Distilleries like Aberlour, Chivas Regal (Strathisla), Glenlivet, Glen Grant and Glenfiddich are world renowned and many offer a tasting in their own visitor centres.
